ISTE Standard #4: Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility

Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.

Personal Definition: This standard references the importance of digital citizenship and appropriate use of technology for all modern-day citizens. Topics within digital citizenship include copyright, intellectual property, citation of sources, "netiquette," privacy online, and global awareness. Teachers need to be teaching these topics openly to students using learner-centered strategies and modelling the right behavior so that students know how to use technology appropriately both in school and beyond.

Artifacts that Align:

  • 4A and 4B: Understanding by Design Project from INSTTECH 6240: Understanding Instructional Design. These sub-standards involve teaching legal and ethical use of digital information and citation of sources, as well as using learner-centered strategies to address diverse student needs. This project involves an informative research paper unit for sophomores that was designed using the UbD framework.

  • 4A, 4B, and 4D: 21st Century Learning Project from INSTTECH 6232: Selecting and Integrating Instructional Technology. These sub-standards involve teaching legal and ethical use of digital information and citation of sources, using learner-centered strategies to address diverse student needs, and using digital tools to help students become global citizens. This project was a presentation describing a unit based on 21st century learning in an English classroom. In the unit, students researched and created documentary films.

  • 4C: Blended Learning Project from INSTTECH 5110: Developing and Directing Online Learning. This sub-standard involves teaching appropriate etiquette and behaviors online. This project is a blended learning unit for a literature class that involved a research presentation and blogging.

Explanation of Criteria:

  • 4A and 4B: Understanding by Design Project from INSTTECH 6240: Understanding Instructional Design. Since this unit revolves around the creation of a research paper, students are learning about citing sources and appropriate use of the Internet, which are both part of digital citizenship. I also used learner-centered strategies when developing the unit.

  • 4A, 4B, and 4D: 21st Century Learning Project from INSTTECH 6232: Selecting and Integrating Instructional Technology. This entire unit uses learner-centered strategies. It revolves around students using the Internet to communicate with others and find information about a global topic of interest to them. There is also a mini-lesson in this unit that specifically covers digital citizenship and citation of sources.

  • 4C: Blended Learning Project from INSTTECH 5110: Developing and Directing Online Learning. The blogging assignment in this unit required students to comment on each other's blog posts; communicating respectfully and thoughtfully online would be a large part of that.
