ISTE Standard #3: Model digital age work and learning

Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society.

Personal Definition: This standard refers to the ability of the teacher to be a positive technology user and advocate both in and out of the classroom. This means that the teacher should be modeling appropriate technology use in his or her professional and personal life, at school and at home, with students and with other adults. It also emphasizes the importance of collaboration and communication with students, other teachers, and the entire community through the use of technology as a support for learning.

Artifacts that Align:

  • 3A and 3D: â€‹Group Blogging Project from INSTTECH 5131: Exploring Issues and Trends in Instructional Technology. These sub-standards involve the understanding of technology systems and transferring understanding to new technology, as well as using digital tools to conduct research to support learning. This project is a website that offers information and tips to teachers on incorporating blogging in the classroom.

  • 3A: Leading Change Project from INSTTECH 6237: Leading Change Through Instructional Technology. This sub-standard involves the understanding of technology systems and transferring understanding to new technology. This plan described my roll-out of the new MLA citation curriculum changes in the language arts department in my district.

  • 3B: Action Plan for MEASRES 6205: Educational Research. This sub-standard involves collaboration with others in the school and community to support learning using technology. This action research plan was created with a partner at a distance. We developed a plan to determine whether using Google Docs affected writing instruction in our language arts classes.

  • 3B and 3D: Action Research for INSTTECH 6205: Enhancing Learning Through Action Research. These sub-standards involve collaboration with others in the school and community to support learning using technology, as well as using digital tools to conduct research to support learning. This action research plan was created for possible future implementation in a language arts class. It describes the plan for determining whether Google's Read & Write extension can help with writing instruction.

  • 3C: ISTE Standard Final Video for INSTTECH 5139: Planning and Producing Instructional Media. This sub-standard involves communication with students, parents, and others using technology. This video was created with a partner to teach others about ISTE Standard #2.

  • 3D: Gamification Project from INSTTECH 5153: Using Digital and Social Media. This sub-standard involves using digital tools to conduct research to support learning. This project involved a gamified research paper unit that I created for my junior/senior writing class.

Explanation of Criteria:

  • 3A and 3D: â€‹Group Blogging Project from INSTTECH 5131: Exploring Issues and Trends in Instructional Technology. This project demonstrates my understanding of blogging as a technology tool and my knowledge in connecting it to possible uses in the classroom. My group members and I demonstrated our transfer of technology knowledge because we were inexperienced with creating a blog before this project but were able to complete the final product. We also conducted research to learn about the benefits of blogging and then shared that information in our project.

  • 3A: Leading Change Project from INSTTECH 6237: Leading Change Through Instructional Technology. This plan shows my interest and knowledge in content changes within the language arts field. It demonstrates my ability to plan out how to introduce these changes to others and convince them to try the innovation.

  • 3B: Action Plan for MEASRES 6205: Educational Research. This action research report shows my willingness to conduct professional research using a technology tool to determine its effectiveness on student learning. In this action research plan, I collaborated with a partner from another school and, if implemented, would work collaboratively with a number of people in my own school community.

  • 3B and 3D: Action Research for INSTTECH 6205: Enhancing Learning Through Action Research. This action research plan demonstrates my willingness to use an emerging digital tool in a new way with students as part of a research study to determine its effectiveness on student learning. Similar to my previous action research plan, this project would involve collaboration with a number of school community members if implemented. I also conducted extensive research for the literature review of this project in support of this action research implementation.

  • 3C: ISTE Standard Final Video for INSTTECH 5139: Planning and Producing Instructional Media. This video project demonstrates my ability to use various tools required for video production, and shows that I am a technology advocate who wants to inform others on technology-related topics like the ISTE Standards. This project could be used to communicate about the ISTE Standards with students, parents, and the community.

  • 3D: Gamification Project from INSTTECH 5153: Using Digital and Social Media. This project shows my interest in using new tech tools and concepts that I learn about and applying them to my own practice. I took a unit that I have taught many times and gamified it to make it more interesting for students. I taught students about conducting research, evaluating website credibility, and citing their research correctly.
