ISTE Standard #2: Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments

Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the Standards.

Personal Definition: This standard describes what many people might refer to as the "lesson plan" process. This standard emphasizes the importance of developing lessons that use technology effectively and purposefully and in a way that best teaches the ISTE Standards. Teachers need to develop classroom experiences that promote creative, personalized, and independent learning that fit diverse student needs. This standard also covers assessing those learning experiences.

Artifacts that Align:

  • 2A, 2B, and 2C: Blended Learning Project from INSTTECH 5110: Developing and Directing Online Learning. These sub-standards involve designing learning experiences with digital tools that promote creativity, creating opportunities for students to pursue and manage their own learning, and personalizing learning for individual student needs and strengths. This project was a blended learning unit for a literature class that involved a research presentation and blogging.

  • 2A and 2C: 21st Century Learning Project from INSTTECH 6232: Selecting and Integrating Instructional Technology. These sub-standards involve designing learning experiences with digital tools that promote creativity and personalizing learning for individual student needs and strengths. This project was a presentation describing a unit based on 21st century learning in an English classroom. In the unit, students researched and created documentary films.

  • 2B and 2D: Gamification Project from INSTTECH 5153: Using Digital and Social Media. These sub-standards involve creating opportunities for students to pursue and manage their own learning and providing varied formative and summative assessments to inform teaching. This project involved a gamified research paper unit that I created for my junior/senior writing class.

  • 2D: Understanding by Design Project from INSTTECH 6240: Understanding Instructional Design. This sub-standard involves providing varied formative and summative assessments to inform teaching. This project involves an informative research paper unit for sophomores that was designed using the UbD framework.

Explanation of Criteria:

  • 2A, 2B, and 2C: Blended Learning Project from INSTTECH 5110: Developing and Directing Online Learning. This project involved in-depth planning using a version of UbD, or "backwards" design. This required me to plan the unit while thinking about the goals for the learning experience, and also plan the assessments showing how students could reach those goals. This unit promoted creativity since the students had blogs that they would post their writing on. Students also managed their own learning since they responded in the blogs with their own opinions on the story and also chose which peers they wanted to respond to. This unit is personalized in this way as every student had a different blogging experience.

  • 2A and 2C: 21st Century Learning Project from INSTTECH 6232: Selecting and Integrating Instructional Technology. This project required a lot of planning, development of lessons and activities, and consideration of how this unit maximizes 21st century learning. The development of this unit was focused on student creativity because it centered around the students' documentary films, and was personalized because students had total control over their projects, from the topics to the tools.

  • 2B and 2D: Gamification Project from INSTTECH 5153: Using Digital and Social Media. The gamification of a pre-existing unit required a deeper look at the unit and more development of the tech tools as well as the game integration. This setup allowed for students to manage their own learning because they could claim rewards as they finished tasks on their papers at their own pace and their own order. I also used this as a formative assessment to inform how to proceed with instruction, with the final paper serving as the summative assessment.

  • 2D: Understanding by Design Project from INSTTECH 6240: Understanding Instructional Design. This entire class, and thus the culminating project as well, focused on a deeper, more effective look at lesson design. The end result was a unit that provided a better learning experience for students. During this unit, I used formative assessments to alter my teaching based on what students understood at the time; the final paper served as their summative assessment.
